THE PEOPLE'S OPINION - right or wrong: ID parade for delinquent student loan borrowers

Shane McKenzie

The Student's Loan Bureau (SLB) has stated that come November 30, it will be publishing the names and pictures of individuals who have defaulted on their payments.

It has been the policy of the SLB to publish the names and pictures of delinquents, even as it encourages beneficiaries experiencing difficulties in repayment to communicate with the bureau.

It's hoping that the latest campaign to force repayment will reduce the more than $2 billion owed by graduates who have refused or cannot repay.

Today, THE STAR, with its newest feature, The People's Opinion, asked a member of the public what he thought about the matter. For Shane McKenzie, persons who have been delinquent in repaying their student loans should be made to pay. He said while the issue is two-fold, persons should repay their loans.

"Sometimes, people have it hard to repay it because the repayment time is so early and they don't start working. There are a lot of people who take the student loan and don't pay. They get it and then migrate. Some of them have no intention of paying. The good have to suffer for the bad some of the time. We can't just keep pumping money into it. It has to be able to maintain itself," McKenzie said.

Stay tuned for next week's segment of the People's Opinion, where the public voice their sentiments on varying topical issues.
