Alleged getaway driver remanded

A man accused of riding up to an assemblage of police officers carrying out their duties, then speeding off with his alleged criminal accomplice, was further remanded in custody when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Charged with accessory after the fact to assault, with intent to rob, and conspiracy to robbery, is 34-year-old businessman Osbert Watson of Rockingham Road and Johnson Avenue, Kingston 2 addresses.

Allegations are that on November 15, at approximately 7:15 p.m., the police were in the process of investigating a case of assault with intent to rob, along a section of Deanery Road, Kingston 3.

Watson reportedly rode up to the scene on a black Honda motorcycle, interrupting the at-work detectives. He later rode off with one of the suspects identified in the matter. The other suspect in the matter under investigation reportedly managed to escape on foot, leaving the accused man's motorcycle in the process. As a result, it was seized by the police.

Sometime later, Watson reportedly turned up at the Elletson Road Police Station to collect his motorcycle, making a false report, in an attempt to retrieve it from police custody.

While recording the statement, the police officer on duty made a link between the supposed fictitious report and the alleged robbery attempt.

Watson was arrested and charged. When cautioned, Watson reportedly said: "Officer, unuh nah go look for the other two man them."

The three men are alleged to have attempted to rob two females walking along Deanery Road.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey ordered Watson remanded in custody, pending disclosure, until today, when he is to reappear. A fingerprint order was also made against him.
