Police inspector on assault rap granted bail

Police inspector Fitzroy Rhoden who is charged with assault occasioning bodily harm after reportedly beating a prisoner was granted $150,000 bail in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Attorney-at-law Valrie Neita-Robertson, in applying for bail, said that the incident occurred in St Ann and her client should appear in that jurisdiction.

Neita-Robertson said that INDECOM personnel told him to meet them in Spanish Town where he was then held.

Resident Magistrate Anmarie Nembhard told the accused that he must reside in Bamboo district St Ann. He was also told by the RM that he is to appear in the St Ann's Bay Resident Magistrate's Court.

Rhoden, who is stationed at the Claremont Police Station, allegedly beat the complainant after the inmate reportedly used a cellular phone from his cell to call a woman.

It is said that in a bid to find the phone the complainant's tooth was knocked out and the accused was said to have stepped on his neck.

A report was subsequently made to the Independent Commission of Investigations, and following a probe he was charged.
