Robbers plague Mandela Highway

Chad Bryan, Staff Reporter

Robberies appear to be plaguing a section of the Mandela Highway in the vicinity of the roadway leading into Portmore, St Catherine.

Two weeks ago, a woman, who was the victim of a robbery in the area, decided to recount her ordeal.

She said while on her way home, she came off her staff bus and was robbed of her handbag and other valuables.

"While I was positioning myself to wait for a bus, I heard someone talking behind me but I didn't pay him any mind. I heard him say 'hey gyal you don't hear I say give me the bag'. I turned around and he had a gun on me. He just took it off my shoulder and was feeling through my lunch bag," the frightened woman recounted.

The bag contained her tablet, cell phone and insurance cards among other things.

She continued that the man fanned the gun at her and told her to head up the road. She said in order to get home she had to beg a ride from a bus heading into Portmore.

When she called the police to report the matter, she was asked why she had left the scene.

"What do you mean why I left the scene? Should I have stood there with the man and the gun? She questioned.

A policewoman at the Central Village Police Station said they have been getting reports about the area. According to the woman, the police have been patrolling the area but no arrests have so far been made.
