Scores of residents from Sydenham and surrounding areas turned out on Sunday at the Sydenham Seventh-day Adventist Church for a chance to get a free check-up as well as counselling. The occasion was the church's annual Health Fair and Exposition.

During the day's activities, residents were given cholesterol check, blood pressure test, HIV check and counselling.

There was also a wide array of books and food items on display.

"It is a very good thing for us; last year we had a dentist and other health professionals. But we are still thankful for the assistance, " Tina Glave, a resident, said.

It was a view echoed by many persons who braved the rain to attend.

Meanwhile, Deacon Sheldon Elliot said the SDA believes in the holistic development of individuals.

"We offer classes in seven subject areas from Monday to Thursday at the church here; we also operate a clinic. In addition, we conduct the health fair annually. It is all a part of giving back, " Elliot said.

The fair was part of the church's drive to win souls.

The Star was told that last year the fair was held in the Homestead community, where persons even got baptised.
