Madman allegedly tries to steal car

André Williams, STAR Writer

The St Thomas police have described as 'minor' a situation in Yallahs yesterday where a man of unsound mind was removed from a storeroom after he gained entry and ransacked the place, THE STAR understands.

Information reaching our news team is that the unidentified man was allegedly attempting to steal a car in the Orange Park, Yallahs area when he got stuck in the vehicle and was set upon by residents.

However, Deputy Superintendent Berisford Williams of the St Thomas police starkly refuted those claims and sought to shed light on the incident.

He told THE STAR, "By all indications, the accused man is of unsound mind. He had gone looking for food inside a storeroom, he was not trying to steal a car. The police, however, took him into custody."

According to the police, charges were not laid against the man.

DSP Williams told our news team, "The proprietors are still checking to see if anything is missing, but the man did not leave with anything."

THE STAR gathered that the police removed the man from the scene after they were summoned.

Our news team was also told that, while the man was locked inside the establishment, several items of food were opened.

It was not disclosed how much damage was caused or how he was discovered inside the storeroom.
