Salesman embezzles more than $1m in cash

A former sales representative at Facey Commodity Company Limited was sentenced in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, on Wednesday, to 18 months' imprisonment after he swindled money from his employers.

Charged with embezzlement is Vin Talbot. The Crown led evidence that Talbot, a former sales representative at the distribution company, collected money on behalf of his employers, but did not take in the monies collected. The outstanding sum amounted to $1,288,400.

Talbot told Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey that he was willing to make restitution at various times he appeared before the court. On one occasion, he paid $100,000 and told the senior magistrate that he needed more time. However, on other occasions, he failed to deliver.

On Wednesday, he beseeched the senior magistrate to give him more time. However, she would hear none of it and told him that he was trying to 'send the fool a little further'.

She then sentenced him to 18 months in prison.
