jubilation among Tivoli residents

Andre' Williams, STAR Writer

There appears to be jubilation among the residents of Tivoli Gardens and Denham Town in the aftermath of the recently concluded West Kingston Jamboree, a free community stage show that was put on hold, indefinitely, following the incursion in 2010.

Residents and patrons from far and wide were out in numbers on Sunday at the Tivoli Gardens playing field, for the grand return of West Kingston Jamboree, after a four-year absence.

The stage show, which had begun in 1999 and was organised by the Presidential Click, was discontinued by the security forces after the unrest of May 2010 which claimed the lives of more than 70 civilians and four members of the armed forces.

A lot has transpired since then, however, on Sunday, the theme of 'oneness' as professed by the rebranded organisers, Liv Up Records, resonated in the atmosphere and showed signs of recovery for a broken community.

Must come back

"Mi did know say West Kingston must come back, a did just a matter of time. see it ya now, everybody happy, is a joy among the residents", said a male in his approval that things felt like old times.

Even the vendors that lined the playing field seeking to 'mek a thing' from the large crowd were in high spirits at minutes to 6 a.m. when the event came to a close on Monday.

A food vendor told THE STAR, "Pickney can go a school a mawning and fi the week and we can put back dung a likkle thing for the Christmas. a long time we nuh see something like this round ya. we glad for it. big up Liv Up Records and the police dem to."

good time

THE STAR spoke to a patron who was not a member of the community but was happy to see the residents having a good time.

She said, "Mi come out jus fi see if it ago nice like it use to be, and it was. the people dem needed something like this. dem go through nuff and dem still a go through it, because see all the enquiry deh a gwan and dem nuh sure a justice. Mi nuh hear of no violence while I was here."

The West Kingston police also confirmed with our news team that the event was incident-free and that their only concern of the sort was that of the utterances of some of the performers who used expletives during their set.

The show saw exciting performances from the likes of Tarrus Riley, Sizzla, Beenie Man, Chi Ching Ching, Pamputae, Popcaan, Ding 0flon and Bugle, to name a few.
