Two accused of selling illegal car papers remanded

A man and woman involved in a case and cross case of conspiracy, who allegedly sold fraudulent motor vehicle documents on the black market, were remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Charged with simple larceny, receiving stolen property, obtaining money by means of false pretence and conspiracy to defraud, is labourer Ronald Oates, 39, from Homestead Road, Kingston 2. Facing said charges is Sandra Morris, 46, from Cassava Piece Road, Kingston 8.

Allegations are that on the day of the incident, the two accused, alongside others, conspired to sell stolen cover notes on the black market for $7,000 each.

Last November, a local insurance company discovered that 1,600 cover notes costing $600,138.10, were missing.

It was discovered that the cover notes were being sold on the black market. The insurance company hired a private investigator who set up a meeting with Morris under the guise of being a buyer. The investigator met Morris and paid her $7,000 for a cover note which she promised to supply the following day.

Armed with a warrant on January 21, the Fraud Squad and detectives from the Major Organised and Anti-Corruption Task Force searched Morris' home. They found cover notes bearing the serial numbers of those stolen. Several illegal motor vehicle documents were also found. Morris told detectives she got the notes from Oates, whom she later identified.

Both were arrested and charged. Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey told them to return to court on February 19.
