Holmwood, St Jago ripe for Gibson Relays class one clash

After Edwin Allen's runaway win in the Championship girls' class one 4x100m at last year's Gibson Relays, things could return to normal this year.

The Frankfield, Clarendon-based team clocked an amazing 44.48 seconds to win, but should have their hands full this year as last year's runners-up Holmwood Technical will seek to go one place better.

Holmwood and St Jago seem the best bets to win, despite Edwin Allen hoping to spoil the party.

At Milo Western Relays, Holmwood shook off the challenge of Edwin Allen to post a winning time of 45.69 seconds. Edwin Allen finished second in 46.09 seconds.

St Jago also showed that they will be in the money on the same day at the Camperdown Classic when they stopped the clock at 45.78 seconds, turning back Wolmer's Girls in 46.28.

After years of not visiting the winning post in this event, the Keilando Goburn-coached team is due, and this Saturday could be the day.

They have a very strong class one team led by first-year class one athletes Shanice Reid and the outstanding Natalliah Whyte. Petagaye Williams and Janeal Brown complete the team that could go all the way.

Sashalee Forbes, Shanta Deer, Britney Hew, and Ashley Williams, who will make up the Holmwood team, will not be scared by the St Jago line-up.

The manner in which they got by Edwin Allen in Montego Bay shows they have the scope to go much faster here.

Whyte will be key for a Jago win, but despite the tough challenge expected from St Jago, the Christiana-based team looks set to make up for last year's second-place finish and is given the edge here.

Wolmer's with Shauna Helps, along with Edwin Allen with Shanice Lewis and Saqukine Cameron, should not be taken lightly, but they will have a lot to do and should not trouble the top two here.
