Bust of McCook to be made

PLANS are in the pipeline to commission a bust in the likeness of former North America Central America and Caribbean Area Association (NACAC) president and International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), Area Representative, Neville 'Teddy' McCook.

Chairman of the Gibson McCook Relays organising committee, Rainford Wilks, made the revelation at Saturday's 39th staging of the event at the National Stadium.

Wilks told STAR Sports that sports gear manufacturers Puma, also a sponsor of the Jamaica national athletics team, had made the suggestion and also have committed to paying for the bust once it is sculpted.

"We're not sure what we're gonna do yet. We are sure it would not go to an individual, but one possibility is that it would go to the winning school, the school thought worthy of that prize. The other possibility is that it be sited in some worthy place," Wilks said.

"Puma has offered to sponsor. It was their idea but the offer came right in the middle of these preparations (Gibson McCook Relays," he added.

McCook, who was also a president of the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (now Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association), died in 2013 after a long battle with cancer.

Wilks said McCook's widow, Sonya, had given her blessing for the project.
