Chelsea, Suarez lead the way

LONDON (AP):

Chelsea were chosen team of the week in the AP Global Football 10 yesterday after beating Tottenham 2-0 in the League Cup final.

A strike from John Terry and an own-goal from Kyle Walker on Sunday gave José Mourinho his first piece of silverware since returning to Chelsea as manager in 2013.

"Mourinho rightfully stole the show after winning the first trophy of the season," Manos Staramopoulos of Dimocratia in Greece said. "Well organised, disciplined and serious, Chelsea cruised."

Barcelona were second after following up its 2-1 victory at Manchester City in the Champions League by beating Granada 3-1. The victory allowed Barcelona to close the gap on Real Madrid to two points after the Spanish leaders drew 1-1 at home to Villarreal.

Top 10

German leaders Bayern Munich are third after defeating Cologne 4-1, finishing ahead of German rivals Wolfsburg, who are in fourth following their 5-3 victory at Werder Bremen.

Liverpool are fifth for beating Premier League champions Manchester City 2-1 at Anfield.

Monaco, Juventus, Villarreal, Fiorentina and Borussia Dortmund complete the top 10.

In the player poll, Luis Suarez is at the top for the first time this season after his performance in Barcelona's win.

Suarez scored one, assisted on another for Lionel Messi and contributed to the move which ended in Ivan Rakitic's opening goal.

Alberto Bueno of Rayo Vallecano is second after scoring four goals in 16 minutes as his team beat Levante 4-2 in the Spanish league. In third is Bas Dost, who improved his tally to 14 goals in his last nine games by scoring twice in Wolfsburg's victory.

Philippe Coutinho is fourth after scoring Liverpool's winner against City as his team extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 11 games.

The result moved Liverpool into fifth place in the Premier League, two points behind Manchester United, who beat Sunderland 2-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday.
