policeman charged with larceny gets bail

Bail was granted to a policeman in the sum of $400,000, with one or two sureties in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Moses Sutherland is charged with simple larceny.

He is being represented by defence attorney Valerie Neita Robertson, who successfully gained bail for her client.

The Crown alleges that, on April 3, last year, the complainant arrived at the Norman Manley International Airport and, after clearing customs, reportedly lost a black pouch with documents and cash.

Luggage said to be unattended was seen in the arrival area and police personnel from the National Intelligence Bureau called to check it.

The items contained in the luggage were checked by Sutherland, ,in the presence of other police, and the items contained therein were recorded.

Sutherland allegedly left with the pouch.

Later, the complainant returned to the airport and went to report that his pouch was missing. He was told that it had been found and left at a security post. However, on checking, the complainant discovered that cash totaling US$410($47,191) was missing

The matter has been set for trial on June 11.
