Calabar High's Lamar Reid was the outstanding performer on yesterday's third day of the ISSA/ GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships at the National Stadium yesterday.

Reid broke a 22-year-old record in winning the Class Three boys high jump. Reid, a native of the Cayman Islands, cleared the bar at 1.99 metres to break the old mark of 1.98 metres, set by former Calabar High jumper, Ryan Chambers, way back in 1993.

It was indeed a good day for jumpers as Edwin Allen High's Annia Ashley captured the Class Three girls event in an impressive 1.77 metres, just failing to clear the 1.78m record. Like she did a year ago, Rusea's Lamara Distin had to settle for second with 1.74m, with third going to Anissa Walters of Holy Childhood with 1.68m.

Ackelia Smith gave Edwin Allen girls their second win of the day after taking the Class Four girls long jump with 5.34m. Valessa Brown of Wolmer's Girls was second with 5.30m, with third going to Samantha Jibberson of Holy Childhood, 5.20m.

Edwin Allen High's Demar Gayle and Kingston College's Rasheeda Downer were victorious in throwing events. Gayle topped the field in the Class One boys discus with an impressive 50.70m, getting the better of Calabar's Warren Barrett with 49.95m. Sanjay Lawrence of Petersfield High was third with 49.65m.

Downer won the Class Two shot put with a heave of 16.47m. Calabar's pair of Andre Chin (15.53m) and Davion Burke (15.10m) were second and third, respectively.

Kingston College suffered a major setback in their bid to dethrone defending champion Calabar. Their top Class Two sprinter, Jhevaughn Matherson, pulled up in his semi-final of the 200m. Drawn in the same heat with Calabar's Tyreke Wilson, Matherson pulled up coming off the bend.

Defending champions Calabar lead the boys' championships with 60 points after seven finals. Rounding off the top five are Jamaica College 40, Kingston College 33, St Jago 18 and Edwin Allen 16.

After six finals in the girls section, defending champions. Edwin Allen lead with 48 points. First day leaders Hydel are now in second with 41. They are followed by Holmwood on 21, St Jago 20.33, Rusea's 12 and Vere Technical 12. A clearer picture with regards to the likely champions will emerge this evening after today's fourth and penultimate day of competition. Twenty-four finals - 13 girls' and 11 boys' - will be contested. Action will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the triple jump open for girls.
