DJ Snow celebrates 30 years as DJ

Curtis Campbell, STAR Writer

Popular selector DJ Snow, is celebrating 30 years in the music industry.

The DJ who has been playing music since age 13, said he has accomplished several things in his long career, however he yearns to play a role on local radio.

"I started off breakdancing, but I loved the music so much that I decided that I wanted to play it. I began playing with vinyl records using one turntable and a cassette player and people used to love the mix. I then got a chance to play with Climax sound and from there it was history," he said.

The veteran DJ later moved on to work with Classique sound system under the influence of mentor Seņor Daley before migrating to the US, where he played music at several clubs and events.

"Right now what I really want is to be a part of Jamaican radio, that is my goal. Some people have approached me, but they have so far said that I am too qualified and they can't pay me," he said.

DJ Snow's popularity in the US saw him rubbing shoulders with several icons in the hip hop community including Biggie Smalls, Puff Daddy, Funk Master Flex among others. "Funk Master Flex was the hip hop DJ at the time and I was called the reggae DJ for my selections," he added.

Despite this DJ Snow was relatively unknown to many Jamaicans, until he returned three years ago. He says the decision has been fruitful.

"I play for six nights out of a week, so that is good for me right now. I have played at some of the hottest old school parties. It is good to be celebrating 30 years in the music and its even more special to see that I am still standing out even with the way the youth dem a deal wid it now. I have grown over time and I no longer say slackness in music, I am now the uplifting DJ, even Mutabaruka recently told me that his was inspired by the way I play my music," he said.

The veteran currently plays at Jollys in Portmore, Mature Mondays in Constant Spring, Club Celeb at Molynes Road, Forever Young club in downton Kingston among others.
