Cops seize guns, rocket launcher on highway

The Trelawny police said two men have been taken into custody over yesterday's seizure of 11 guns and a rocket launcher during a spot check.

The men were reportedly stopped while travelling in a pickup along the Scarlett Hall area of the North Coast leg of Highway 2000. The guns and rocket launcher were found in a barrel.

An investigator said the weapons were concealed in what he described as a well-taped and packaged parcel.

The cops are warning motorists against alerting persons of police presence on the roads. Deputy Superintendent Odeen Dennis told The Star that the men almost eluded the police because other motorists warned them of their presence.

Fortunately, Dennis said the police saw what was happening and thwarted the bid to escape.

The senior policeman is warning motorists to desist from doing this because, according to him, many lives could be lost based on the number and types of guns seized.

Some of the weapons seized include a rocket launcher, an M-16, an AK-47, a Sniper rifle, one Intratek sub-machine and a Uzi sub-machine, among others.

The police said 16 guns have been recovered in the parish since the start of the year.
