Calabar was perfect, says KC coach

LIVINGSTON SCOTT, STAR Writer

Kingston College coach, Neil Harrison, said 'lady luck' neglected them and injuries cost them the Boys' Championships this year.

The North Street school finished with 265 points behind four-time back-to-back champions, Calabar (280.50) at the National Stadium on Saturday.

However, Harrison, who took charge of the famed 'Purples' last summer, complimented his main rival and eventual winners, Calabar and their coach Michael Clarke, who he thought were nearly perfect in their execution over the five days of competition.

"I think the Kingston College team showed a lot of courage; they were really courageous. We made a lot of mistakes in the early part of Champs. However, we fought gallantly and the boys lived up to expectation. I believe if we had a little luck on our side, we could have pulled it off, but the dice just didn't roll our way. I am grateful, things could have been worse, so we give God thanks for small mercies," he said.

"I think apart from Calabar's mishap in the 4x100 (Class Two, where they were disqualified) and to a lesser extent, the medley relay, they had pretty much a perfect Champs. Injuries really cost us this championship, but it comes with the territory, and we just have to wheel and come again next year," he continued.

Harrison, who left Munro after 17 years to join KC, said despite not getting the top prize, he proved he is capablee of leading Kingston College to glory in the future.

"This is my first year as head coach of Kingston College and I believe we have showed to the public, the country, and the spectators that I am a coach that can lead. There is no doubt about my character and my coaching qualities. It is a good start for me as the head coach of Kingston College, and I really look forward to next year. Hopefully, we will come better next time," he said.
