Muir enters 100-winner's enclosure

Crucial Appeal

JOCKEY Shamaree Muir joined the 100-race winner's enclosure at Caymanas Park on Saturday. Muir booted home 7-1 chance CHIEF SECRETARIAT in the 10th event, the Joshua Morrison Memorial, to mark his 100th win since graduating from the jockeys' school in September 2012.

He returned to the saddle two months ago after being sidelined due to an exercise-morning spill in January.

Meanwhile, Patrick Lynch's CRUCIAL APPEAL made all in the 1200-metre Lady Geeta Trophy to deny six rivals from the two most dominant stables in grade-one races.

In addition to beating Harry Parsard's trio, comprising POTCHEEN, and the United States-bred pair, PETE'SWILDONE and UPPA TUNE, CRUCIAL APPEAL also turned back three runners from champion trainer Wayne DaCosta's barn - FORTUNEONEHUNDRED, PERFECT NEIGHBOUR and DOUBLE THE HONEY.

Parsard's trio have been dominating grade one since the back end of last year. CRUCIAL APPEAL had the handicaps in his favour despite being sent off at odds of 6-1 in the eight-horse line-up.

The five-year-old gelding bolted from post position three to lead the imported pair of FORTUNEONEHUNDRED and UPPA TUNE down the backstretch.

Carrying 50.0 kilos with Paul Francis aboard, Lynch's runner held his gallop well when FORTUNEONEHUNDRED challenged three and a half furlongs out.

Running against the rail, CRUCIAL APPEAL led comfortably entering the straight and quickened away from FORTUNEONEHUNDRED. Asked to run by Francis, he changed gears when UPPA TUNE assumed the chase a furlong and a half out.

The speedy chestnut posted a final time of 1:12.0 after ripping splits of 22.3 and 45.0 into the lane.

Shane Ellis rode four winners - Come DANCE WITH ME, BARS OF GOLD, POWER OF THE CAT and 10-1 outsider TERRA MARIQUE.

Ellis now has 24 wins and sits joint second in the jockey's standings with Dane Nelson, behind leader Omar Walker on 26.
