He is Richard Broderick, charged with assault occasioning bodily harm. He pleaded "guilty with explanation" to the offence.

Machete

The Crown alleged that Broderick used a machete to slap the male complainant on his right leg, just above the knee.

"This man here is a obeah worker," the accused began.

He further alleged that he would often receive threats from the complainant. He said the complainant would carry out a number of outlandish rituals, stating that his mother and his nine-month-old infant would soon meet their demise.

"There is nothing that you have told me that amounts to a defence in law," Resident Magistrate Maxine Ellis said. "Suppose him want to cut off fowl neck and drink the blood. Nuh fi him business? That mean you believe in those things, then. Go and pray and neutralise him! Don't go out and hit him with a machete,"

Subsequently, the sitting magistrate ordered the accused man to return to court on May 21 for sentencing. A fingerprint order was also made against him.
