Black River Day celebrations for July 31

The Black River chapter of the St Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce and the St Elizabeth Parish Council are busy putting plans in place to ensure another successful staging of the annual Black River Day Celebrations on July 31.

According to the Chairman of the Black River Chamber of Commerce, George 'GT' Taylor, he is confident that the event will enjoy another successful staging this year.

"This will be the third staging of the event, and we believe it will be a great success. Over the last two years, it has been growing tremendously. Black River Day was created to highlight the businesses in the town of Black River and the people who are working hard to keep this beautiful historic town alive," he said.

Throughout the day, there will be various activities highlighting the rich culture and heritage of the Jamaican people.

The Black River Chamber of Commerce has partnered with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) to ensure that patrons will have a fun-filled day. The day's offerings will include a float parade, Johnkonno dancing, mento yard, a health fair and a kiddie's village. There will also be a stage show featuring a number of popular acts in the night.

"The whole entire day will be an awesome experience; there will be lots of tents with vendors selling a variety of products. We have also joined forces with the JCDC to create an authentic cultural experience. we will have a big float parade, marching bands, there will also be a business village, and all businesses in the town will offer patrons huge discounts on the day of the event," said Taylor.

The day's activities begin at 9 a.m. and culminate at 2 a.m. with the reading of the Emancipation proclamation by the Custos of St Elizabeth Beryl Rochester to celebrate the freeing of the slaves in 1838.
