Capelton blazes trail at Caymanas Park

Dancehall act Capleton blazed a trail of hits at Caymanas Park on Saturday, leading to a record $39.6m in sales, the best day for an average meet at the racetrack so far this year.

Patrons streamed into the track and pushed sales past the $38.4m wagered in March when Sizzla Kalonji appeared on the McKay Security Caymanas Live Artiste of the Month series. The 'Fireman' went old school early into his performance with songs such as Jah Jah City and Baby Don't Cry No More. With the crowd singing along, Capleton was more than happy to have patrons complete his songs.

"It was a nice vibes, a good performance. The people were singing word for word. The people appreci-loved it and they said it was one of the best performances of the series," Capleton said on Wednesday.

The Caymanas Live Series, he said, had him in high spirits after he left Caymanas Park and headed to the downtown Kingston waterfront, where he performed later that evening at the unveiling of the Reggae Boyz' new team kit.

"The people were into the performace. It was like a normal crowd. I've been performing in Portmore from Fort Clarence days and I am no stranger to Jamworld, so it was a joy at Caymanas Park. I would definitely go back there and perform for the people," he added.

With Capleton's performance helping to add an additional $3.85m to the average $35.5m, McKay Security's chief executive officer, Jason McKay, said targets are being met and exceeded.

"The programme is designed to increase sales and to assist in the rebranding of the plant to become an entertainment complex, not just a racetrack. This result shows it works," he said.
