Man assaults cop on video, remanded

The man who was caught on video drawing a knife at a policeman in Half-Way Tree, St Andrew, resulting in him being shot in the leg, was remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday for psychiatric evaluation.

Charged with assault at common law is Ryan Duffus.

The court heard that the complainant, who is a policeman, saw Duffus with a knife.

The policeman approached him and he threw it on the roof of a building. Duffus allegedly pulled a second knife and attempted to stab at the policeman, which resulted in him being shot in the leg.

Limping into court on Wednesday morning, the accused man told Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey that he didn't stab at the cop. He also explained that he was sold a knife by a policeman.

The magistrate asked if Duffus was of sound mind, then ordered that a psychiatric evaluation be done on him.

He is expected to return to court on May 29.
