JPS to invest $87m in meter upgrade

Jamaica Public Service has announced the commencement of a seven-month operation to upgrade aspects of the Residential Advanced Metering Infrastructure (RAMI) system across Jamaica.

Starting this month, in Flanker, St James, the improvements will result in fewer estimated bills, quicker connections and reconnections. The upgrades represent an investment of US$750,000 or approximately $87 million.

Roughly 13,500 JPS customers islandwide will benefit from the initiative, starting with 2,000 customers in the Flanker community of Montego Bay.

breaches

Flanker was selected as the starting point for this project because of the high level of breaches of the RAMI system in the area, which in turn has resulted in multiple outages and a high incidence of estimated bills. The company has been appealing to residents to desist from connecting to the streetlights, as this practice not only results in malfunctioning lights, but also interferes with the communication system - leading to large numbers of estimated bills for legitimate customers. Alongside this appeal, however, the company has been seeking alternative measures to mitigate the effects of breaches on its customers.

The RAMI system was implemented in 2010 in six communities in Kingston & St Andrew, St Catherine, and St James.

Application of the system has since spread to other communities across the country. The system facilitates the remote reading of meters as well as remote connection and disconnection.
