JaVA Coaching Course wraps up today

The Jamaica Volleyball Association (JaVA) one-week Level I Coaching Courses with International Volleyball Coach, Augusto Sabbatini, from Brazil, wraps up today in Montego Bay.

The clinic heads to Kingston next week Tuesday through Friday.

The seminar underscores the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation's (NORCECA) advancement plan of sending highly rated coaches to help the development process of volleyball, regionally.

JAVA Development manager, Major Warrenton Dixon said it is time to lift the profile of the sport.

"We (JaVA) have long recognised that we need to lift coaching competencies of our coaches and increase the reservoir of knowledge of those involved in the process," Dixon said.

He credited the primary level schools programme for "substantial improvement to the quality of play in average youth players".

"Even in Trinidad, (Jamaica) is being looked on and praised as having the potential to go places in volleyball. We really have to mean business," he urged.

Dixon told STAR Sports: "JAVA keeps sending out proposals, hoping corporate Jamaica adopts volleyball, noting Jamaica has great talent, which, with investment could make the country into a regional powerhouse in the sport."

President of JaVA, Rudolph Speid, was thankful to NORCECA and CAZOVA for their investment in the development of the local sport.

"Jamaica is currently ranked as a Category II National Volleyball Federation, which simply means that the perception of our level of play and administration is low. As we did with the recent beach volleyball tournament, JaVA wants to advertise to the world that we are not here to play second fiddle to any country.

We intend to at least take Jamaica to Category III in the next two to three years."
