Court hears ... CHILD BEATEN WITH BED FOOT

A teacher of an early childhood institution was hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday for hitting a child repeatedly.

Charged with assault occasioning bodily harm is Shanique Kerr.

In court, Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey began questioning the young man about the incident. However, he was too shy. The magistrate then allowed the police to place him in her seat. He then explained to her what transpired at school.

The Crown is alleging that the complainant, a five year-old student of the early childhood institution, was beaten with a bed foot at school by his teacher on his hand, resulting in swellings.

The father of the complainant said in court that his child was beaten on two previous occasions and that he had brought it up in the parent-teacher association meeting and the school had apologised.

A medical certificate is still outstanding in the case and the matter was subsequently set for mention on June 29.
