A historic day for gays in America

Another history making decision has come out of America and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual (LGBT) community is thrilled.

On June 26, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that gay marriage is now legal throughout all 50 states.

This announcement has incited a lot of passion from all sides - some happy, some very upset. I can see why the LGBT community fought so hard for the right to be married to their partners. What I find very interesting are the reasons opposers have for not allowing homosexuals to be married.

The Bible

Of course there are a myriad of verses in the Bible that completely condemn homosexuality, and the Christians among us are livid that the US has passed this legislation. As citizens of a Christian-minded country, many Jamaicans are not happy with this new law and some are terrified about what it will mean for Jamaicans, especially those who travel. The ultimate goal is to keep Jamaican legislators from getting any idea about mimicking this action.

It will affect heterosexual marriage

There are some persons who feel that allowing gay marriage is damaging the direct definition of marriage which is "a union between man and woman." There is the thought that the foundation of marriage is producing children and homosexual couples cannot naturally achieve this feat, so they shouldn't be allowed to get married.

It will increase paedophilia

This is perhaps the most interesting of the reasons because it is an unfair characterisation. There is a clear distinction between paedophilia and homosexuality. One includes consenting adults (homosexuality) and the other includes an adult violating a child (paedophilia). In addition, paedophiles are interested in pre-pubescent children, which is very different from two adults wanting to spend their lives together.

It's not natural - No one is born gay

The debate continues about the existence of a 'gay gene' or whether it's nature or nurture that makes a person gay. Regardless of what the origins are, the outcome is that gay people exist and we are all a part of nature. Personally, it is not important to prove if it's a choice, I think that adults should be able to make it without facing persecution.

It's going to increase homosexuality

There is this constant fear that gay marriage being legal will increase the number of gay persons that exist. What will happen is that more people will feel comfortable coming out of the closet. I think that it is better for people to be true to who they are especially when it comes to sexuality.

There is a quote that says "if America gets the flu, Jamaica will catch a cold". I know that legal gay marriage is not a symptom that Jamaica will start showing any time soon. I do, however, believe that the way homosexuals are treated in this country needs serious adjustments. My Christian colleagues will disagree, but I think gay Jamaicans should be able to live in our beautiful country without persecution. At the end of the day, regardless of sexuality, we are all human beings and we all want to be loved.

Question

Dear Dr Sexy-Ann

My boyfriend and I were thinking about trying a threesome. What are some of the things we should consider? We want someone we are comfortable with. Should I ask my best friend to be a part of it?

Keisha, Portmore

Dear Keisha,

Trying new things in sex can be fun, but I will not recommend that you invite your best friend into your sex life, as it will affect the texture of your relationship. Whoever you choose, make sure you set the rules, get tested so you don't endanger yourself because of a sexual experience. Have fun and stay sexy!

Stay sexy,

Dr Sexy-Ann
