Williams heads World University Games team

Sprint hurdler Danielle Williams who captured her second title in three years at last weekend's National Senior Athletics Championships will head Jamaica's 12-member track and field team to the World University Games in Gwanju, South Korea.

Williams, winner of the women's 100m hurdles in 12.71 seconds, will be hoping to improve on the bronze medal she won two years ago in Kazan, Russia.

Also making the trip to South Korea is the University of Technology's (UTech) Simolya Campbell. Campbell clocked an impressive personal best of 1:59.92, in finishing second to Natoya Goule in the women's 800 metres to book her spot to the Beijing World Championships in August. She will also compete in the two-lap event in South Korea.

The other female athletes are NCAA Division II heptathlon champion, Salsia Slack of New Mexico Heights University, Tovea Jenkins of Johnson C Smith University who will compete in the 400 metres, Rhonda Whyte of G.C. Foster College (400 metres hurdles), Kedisha Dallas of G.C. Foster College (200 metres), Shimarya Williams and Megan Simmonds of UTech who will contest the 100m and the 100m hurdles, respectively.

The four male members of the squad are University of Nebraska's, Chad Wright who finished third in the discus and fourth in the shot put at the National Championships; Andre Clarke of G.C. Foster College who will compete in the 400m hurdles; Kemarley Brown of UTech who will compete in the 100m and Louisiana State University's Fitzroy Dunkley who will compete in the 400m.

Local-based members of the delegation will leave the island this morning. Head of delegation Anthony Davis, head coach Donald Hawthorne, and assistant manager Delta Wright are already in South Korea.
