Elaborate surveillance system, 150m tunnel discovered in Tivoli

A high-ranking member of the Jamaican military has revealed that an 'elaborate and fully functional' surveillance system and a tunnel, estimated to be about 150 metres long, were discovered in the Tivoli Gardens stronghold of drug kingpin Christopher 'Dudus' Coke during the May 2010 operations.

Lieutenant Colonel David Cummings, commander of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Engineering Regiment at the time, told the west Kingston commission of enquiry yesterday that the surveillance system was found inside an apartment located on Dee Cee Avenue.

"This system had a large flat screen tv which displayed the roads leading to all areas of Tivoli Gardens. So whoever was monitoring it could see persons entering the community," Cummings testified.

According to him, the system was handed over to the police.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force, through its attorneys, has indicated that checks will be made to determine where the system is.

According to Cummings' testimony, the tunnels were discovered in the Java section of Tivoli Gardens.

Noting that he was able to walk a section of the tunnel, Cummings said the space inside got smaller before it exited at a manhole along Spanish Town Road.

"There were a couple of branches that went in other directions," he said.
