Russell's time to shine

Russell

After winning her first national senior title in the 400m hurdles at the National Senior Championships last week, Janieve Russell will be making her second Diamond League appearance this season when she goes up against a quality field in the event at tomorrow's meet in Paris.

Russell, who took the advantage of her training partner, Kaliese Spencer's absence, to score a narrow win over veteran Shevon Stoddart, will be hoping to go one place better than her second-place finish in a season's best 54.83 seconds done in Rome.

Russell will be hoping to turn the tables on the United States' Georgganne Moline, who won in Rome.

Moline failed to make the United States World Championships team after falling at the sixth barrier at their Championships.

The American has a season's best 54.29 seconds, done in Oslo, and will want to go much faster.

The fastest athlete in the line-up will be the United States' Cassandra Tate, who finished second at the US Championships in 54.01.

Defeating her here will be a big boost for Russell as Tate is the second-fastest athlete this season.

It will also be interesting to see how the defending world champion, Zuzanna Hejnova of the Czech Republic, performs.

She is coming off an injury earlier this year and is yet to show the form that took her to that big title two years ago. Hejnova is yet to break 55 seconds.

An interesting entrant here is South African Wanda Nel, who, at one stage, had the leading world mark of 54.37 seconds.

There are definitely some big scalps for Russell, who needs some confidence here going into the remainder of the season.
