Assault rifle seized in Portland

An AK-47 assault rifle was seized in Norwich district, Portland, on Saturday bringing to two the number of firearms seized in the community in as many days.

Reports from the Port Antonio police are that about 3:30 p.m., the weapon, which was loaded with fourteen 7.62 rounds of ammunition, was found during a search of a section of a property in the community. No one was arrested in connection with the find.

About 1:30 a.m. on Friday, police officers who were patrolling the area seized a Beretta Jericho handgun, along with a magazine containing one live round.

Fifty-four-year-old Henry Gayle of White River in Norwich was arrested in connection with the seizure and subsequently charged. He is to appear in the Port Antonio Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
