Girls making steady improvement

LIVINGSTON SCOTT, STAR Writer

JAMAICA’S netball technical director, Jill McIntosh, is quietly pleased with the progress the Sunshine Girls continue to make since their 3-0 series win over Barbados two weeks ago.

On Friday, the Girls defeated the Berger Elite All-Stars team 72-28 and certainly looked much more familiar with each other, more coordinated in their plays, and had far fewer unforced errors.

Though McIntosh was delighted with what she saw, especially in defence, she warned that the competition in Australia will be much fiercer, so they must keep trying to reduce these unforced errors each day.

“I thought we had some nice setting plays, also I thought they defend quite well and kept the All-Stars team to a really low score,” she said following the warm-up match.

“I was mostly pleased with the defence. We just have a few unforced errors that we still have to eliminate,” she pointed out.

SOME PRESSURE

“We know how hard it’s going to be against the speed of the people we are going to be playing (at the World Cup), so we’ve got to keep at it all the time. We have to continue to put some pressure on them (players) so they do what they have to do under pressure,” she added.

Jhaniele Fowler-Reid was back to her imperious best and showed great understanding with wing attack Khadijah Williams as she sunk 53 from 67 attempts.

Shanice Beckford posted eight from 11 attempts and Anna- Kaye Griffiths 11 from 11 shots.

However, with only a month remaining before the tournament gets going in Austrialia, McIntosh said preparation is on track

“Matches like tonight (Friday) are invaluable, they are definitely sharp and they are getting there, and we are making the final touches in the next three, four weeks,” she added.
