Tropical storm expected to weaken

MIAMI (AP):

Tropical Storm Fred is moving farther away from the Cape Verde Islands and is expected to weaken. The storm's maximum sustained winds Tuesday afternoon are near 50 mph (80 kph).

Fred is centred about 330 miles (531 kilometres) northwest of the Cape Verde Islands and is moving west-northwest near 12 mph (19 kph). Fred is expected to weaken into a tropical depression by late today.

Meanwhile in the Pacific, Hurricane Jimena has weakened but remains a powerful Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds near 120 mph (193 kph). Jimena is centred about 1,000 miles (1609 kilometres) east of Hilo, Hawaii, and is moving west near 10 mph (16 kph).

Also in the Pacific, a tropical depression is expected to become a tropical storm later in the day. The depression has maximum sustained winds near 35 mph (55 kph). It's centred about 695 miles (1118 kilometres) south-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula and is moving west-northwest near 9 mph (14.48 kph).
