Real Talk - Black Queen: Spice - the real bad girl

Renee Dillion, STAR Writer

It is another exciting week with 'Real Talk' where we discuss real issues with real people. Folks, it doesn't get realer than this.

Our guest for this week is the 'stage show boss', Spice. Spice rolled up at THE STAR in her luxury vehicle earlier this week. Though she was looking good, Spice thought she was not video-light ready, so we ended up conducting the interview inside her car.

During our talk with Spice, we touched on several topics, but in this installment, we will only share some of the responses, specifically those relating to her music and major milestones.

STAR: Who is your favourite female dancehall artiste?

Spice: You know, to be honest, I'm not gonna give you one name because I like quite a few. I'm not gonna stick it to dancehall alone. Etana a my girl. Me love Etana. When me hear her music, it is so soulful and very nice. I love her as a person as well because, you know, she's my friend and she is very encouraging. But when you talk bout dancehall artiste, Pamputtae a me fren from day one. Mi real fren dat, and of course, Vanessa Bling. She's doing well right now. She's my friend, my little sister.

STAR: So, you only listen to your friends (chuckles)?

Spice: (Laughs) No man! I listen to other females, but Etana, Pamputtae, and Gaza Slim me a listen right now.

STAR: When you first came into the business, did you ever imagine that you would've got this big?

Spice: Definitely not! I remember when I came into the business, I was just trying a thing (laughs). I just left St Catherine High School and a friend of mine introduced me to Heavy D, who is a part of Sting. Me always a mash up di school so she seh she know me can mash up Sting. So I decided to try a ting and buss di place. It's nothing that I could ever imagine that I would be. It wasn't planned, but I didn't imagine that I would've reached this place in dancehall.

STAR: How comfortable are you with where you are now in the music?

Spice: If you gave me on a scale of one to 10, I'd say five.

STAR: Really? (raises eyebrows)

Spice: (Laughs) Yeah, man! Me no reach nowhere yet. Even right now, I don't have a manager. I basically do everything for myself and I think I'm at a level right now where I'm saying I need to find a management team so I can focus only on the music. I think that way, it will take me further. I still have a long way to go, and I think there's so much I could be doing better in my career.

STAR: In your music, and most of your interviews, you are portrayed as a 'bad girl', are you really a bad girl?

Spice: Yes, man! Mi a bad, bad, bad, bad gal (laughs)!!! I'm very aggressive, I can tell you that. I'm not going to lie and beat around the bush. If you get pon mi nerves, mi just snap and get off. I will fight.

STAR: When was your last fight?

Spice: Uum, (laughs) maybe last year?

STAR: Who got beat up?

Spice: No, me haffi win di war, man. Me cyaan afford fi lose di war. I'm gonna tell you this, every year, I say to myself: 'This is the one thing I'm going to change about me. I'm going to be calmer in spirit. I'm going to count one to 10.' I say that every year and also on my birthday, but by the next day, I'm at it again, so I don't think I can change that. (laughs)

STAR: Do you have a relationship with males in the business?

Spice: I am friends with 95 per cent of the men in the business. Bounty Killer played a major part in the opening of my career. He used to call me up whenever there's a show. I have to big up Bounty. We kinda have that bond and that kind of relationship from back in the day. The list goes on - I-Octane, Aidonia. None a dem naa pass me.

STAR: If you had to date a dancehall artiste, who would it be?

Spice: (Laughs) Me cyaan call da name deh! (LOL) I'm joking. I've never looked at any in that way. I don't think there's any that I would get romantic with.

This is where we leave you for this week. We continue our chat with Spice next week. Until then, keep it real!
