Wailing Driva

Taking taxis is a big part of the Jamaican experience, and boy, aren't they hotspots for drama? Taxi Tales chronicles the adventures of two young journalists travelling on public transportation.

Sher: Bwoy, Ren and I can chat! Everywhere we go we collect friends because we love to chat.

We were famous for our morning conversations in the taxis we took to work. Man! Taxi drivers neva min' giving us a turn-off because wi conversations used to sweet dem.

Ren: A true, man. When anno music we a talk bout, a govament, crime, and just how we stay as Jamaicans overall. One mawnin, we were in a taxi. We saw a guy who we met in another taxi some time ago.

So me go shout out "Sher see di soldier deh, weh say him crash him car odda day!" But little did I know that di driva know him. Mercy! Di conversation tek a turn.

Sher: Tek a turn? Di conversation bend a deep corna. Driva start fi tell wi how a 'ooman di soldier did a tink bout mek him crash.

Driva seh he himself is a ex-cop and him know the crashing effect weh 'ooman have pon man. He said he was married to a witch who nearly drive him mad, too. Driva seh him was a rogue cop (yuh know, dem one deh weh do illegal tings pon di side).

Ren: Driva say him used to mek crazy money, live inna big house wid him wife and kids. So tru him a gwaan good inna life, him go outta di marriage go get pickney. Hehaaay! Him say him wife vow fi mek him life a living hell because him diss har.

Sher: Mi seh, Ren was in the front an' mi did inna di back. Mi a cock mi ears fi hear good cause di story start fi get interesting when Driva seh di witch (his wife) start fi report all the hustling weh him used to do to his bosses in the force. Driva seh when dat neva did a work cause dem couldn't find evidence, she start fi report lies to his colleagues and tell dem how him beat har, run har dung wid gun, and lock har out of the marital home.

Ren: Driva say everybody believe Witch because she was a very good liar. Him say all one of him good friends inna di force did believe 'cause him did waan Witch long time.

Sher: Di man seh him couldn't believe seh she tek di one likkle outside pickney so personal, 'cause dat a regular ting inna Jamaica. Him seh all di daughter weh him and Witch share start fi tek side inna di dispute. Him seh di daughter sided with him as she, too, saw that her mom was a witch.

Ren: Long story short, Driva say him and Witch go dem separate ways and him daughter migrate and say she nah come back a Jamaica. Anyway, time passed and smaddy inna Witch family did dead. Driva now say him contact him daughter and beg har fi come a di funeral 'cause family a family, even though him hate Witch people dem like poison.

Sher: Driva seh begging turned into ordering when di daughter refused to come. Driva seh him get rough pon har and she give up and seh, "a true yuh a mi fadda enuh, dats why mi a go listen to yuh an' come."

Ren: Mi only see Driva mout start tremble, eye bottom a shake and voice a crack. Driva buss out inna one piece a bawling as he told us how his daughter ended up coming for the funeral and died a few days after arriving in Jamaica.

Sher: Driva seh up to now, nobaddy nuh know what kill him daughter. Him seh she simply woke up feeling sick and went to the hospital where she died. Him seh kill him dead, Witch had something to do wid it.

Driva did deh pon a weeping and wailing. Mi did sorry fi him, but mi did also want him fi drive properly wid the tears inna him eyes. Ren tun one piece a comforter, a hush di man an' a tell him fi dun.

Driva did all ketch tempa and couldn't finish him sentence dem. Him seh him blame himself fi him daughter death 'cause a him did force har fi come a Jamaica.

Ren: Him say all him other kids overseas call him and seh "Daddy, a yuh mek wi sista dead. We nah come back a Jamaica."

Him seh him wish him cudda run weh forever and nobody no see him again. Me nah lie, me did feel it fi him. When we reached work, we encouraged him and wished him all the best.

Sher: We exited the taxi and continued in a somber mood to work. Donkey seh di worl' nuh level, and when mi think bout Driva and him plight, mi know dat is so true.
